In the last couple of articles I discussed some different mediums that can be used to convey your message to a "niche market." So far I have covered two mediums that are available for this very purpose. In this article I would like to discuss a third option, that being newspapers.
Newspapers are a great source for getting your message out to the consumers. Newspapers remain in circulation today, despite the raise of the internet, because consumers gain some sort of textile enjoyment from reading the paper everyday. Like all mediums though the paper has its pros and cons. One of the good things about using the newspaper as a medium for your message is that they are very effective in conveying your message. This occurs because the readers of newspapers consume that media as news, in their mind EVERYTHING in that paper is news. This has two implications that are important to marketers. The first being that your message is important or it would not have made it into the paper. The second is that your message has to have a news angle. I will cover this in greater detail when I discuss writing a press release.
Another good thing about newspapers as a medium for your message is the Sunday edition. The Sunday edition of the paper is usually the biggest and most read. It attempts to recap all of the events that happened that week and maybe provide an idea of what to expect during the next week. This edition of the paper is great for marketers. (That is why you see so many ads fall out of the Sunday paper)
The paper does have its limitations. The message has to be simple and can not include sound or motion. The second drawback is that your message will be subjected to the editors whims concerning content and placement in the paper. You can pay for a front page ad but that does not mean that it will be where it is supposed to be. Stories and messages get shifted around for the best appeal to the papers target audience. Your message may even be removed from that edition of the paper.
